Medics need to be handled gently because the job they do is so much more visceral then the job most of the rest of us have. Big difference between blowing a hole in some person/place/thing and being wrist-deep in your friends.
I'm not huge on gate-keeping, if you wore a uniform you wore a uniform and if you got some decent food while others didn't good on ya, man.

Gerrit's mess hall taco story could only happen at Fort Sam Houston. That's where the Army trains medics, and for some reason the Army decided potential medics needed to be handled gently.
The rest of the Army never experienced a taco at breakfast during basic training. Or two types of meat. Or the opportunity to make a menu selection.
