Dear friends,
Hopefully, you have heard about the proposed federal regulations that will broaden the “Public Charge” test for immigrants seeking to obtain legal status. Many of us are worried about the impact on immigrants. These rules, if implemented, may prevent some immigrants from gaining a green card or entering the US as permanent residents. The rules may also make immigrants reluctant to use benefits to which they are entitled. Attached are two documents that explain this proposed change: FAQs from the Office of Refugee and Immigrant Assistance and a fact sheet with scenarios from Protecting Immigrant Families, a national coalition advocating against the rules.
There are two ways you can respond:
· You can comment on the proposed rules by December 10. See the attached FAQ sheet from the Office of Refugee and Immigrant Assistance for all the details.
· You can attend a community forum to learn more about the proposed rules so you can inform the communities you serve. Tacoma Community House and Northwest Immigrant Rights Project will hold a Community Forum on this topic on December 10 at 3:30 pm, here at Tacoma Community House. You are invited and we encourage you to invite others.
I hope you can participate, both by comments and by attending the forum.
Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving!
Liz
