Re: Daily digest for fullcoalition@list.pchomeless.org Sean Harrison 17 Jun 2021 15:25 UTC

Hello All,

I have a 60-something year old that is facing eviction due to the fact
that she is having her apartment of 4 years demolished and the land
being developed. She has Substance Use Disorder, lives with mental
health challenges, and more than likely has some cognitive
difficulties. She is on section 8 housing with a fixed monthly income
due to SSI. She's lived independently for quite some time with her
pets, and is just wholly unprepared for the difficulties surrounding
the navigation of finding a new residence. She says that she's been
laughed at, patronised, and hung up on in her search for a new home.
I was wondering if any of you had any leads on an agency, org, or
persons that could help alleviate some of the anxiety she's facing
trying to avoid homelessness. Unfortunately it's getting close to the
time. I can provide transportation for appointments, but I'm just
wondering to whom would be the most beneficial for her to speak with.
Hap[py Thursday and happy Juneteenth!
Thanks, Sean

One thing we do know, unemployment benefits are temporary and does not provide long term stability compared to employment. Millions of jobs are left unfilled, and here are a few reasons why:

Folks who know the behavioral health, criminal justice, and/or law enforcement sides of our work might want to take a look at the actual legislation to see if it contains recommendations that we might propose - without waiting for federal action. This is not my area of expertise. We may already do everything proposed. Or maybe we just need to expand what we already do. Note: the press release cites Eugene, Oregon - that's CAHOOTS.

> Just wanted to share the most recent Action Network letter campaign directed at City of Tacoma leadership calling for the rejection of the camping ban. Our core points include:
> Even if amended, we fear that this ordinance will be used to increase policing of the unhoused causing more punishment for trying to survive outside, as seen with similar ordinances implemented across the country. We want a housing solution, not a policing one, to address homelessness. We will not solve this crisis without listening to the input from experts on homelessness -- homeless people themselves -- referencing MDC's 2020 Sheltering the Unsheltered in Tacoma report's findings.

Councilmembers Ushka, Beale, Blocker and Hines sit on that committee (who are all listed as targets in the letter campaign along with the rest of Council & City Manager's Office.

It’s best if they contact the CE Specialist or agency that they had the initial conversation with. If they were entered in the Priority Pool after the first conversation, they will remain there for 90 days if they are not referred to a program. If they are not referred to a program within 90 days and they still need housing, they need to contact CE again for an updated assessment.

> Renters’ Readiness Certification (RRC) classes, organized by Landlord Liaison Program at Associated Ministries in partnership with Tacoma Housing Authority, Pierce County Housing Authority, Vadis, Sound Outreach, and Spinnaker Property Management, are FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. RRC classes are a great opportunity to learn about community resources, prepare to rent, learn financial basics to help understand credit in the rental application screening process, and learn about the rights and responsibilities of tenants and landlords in Washington State. Although classes are offered in preferred order, attend any class when you are able and that meets your needs! Attend one class, two classes, or all three classes! When you complete all three classes, you will receive a Certificate of completion.
